Woodcock’s elliptical bone-coloured, Jesmonite form rests within an oval patinated mild steel surface that appears to slightly hover above the ground. This platform is etched with lines that radiate outwards like the ripples in a pond, with welded circular and oval plaques bisecting them, giving a sense of movement.
Woodcock is fascinated by phenomena that challenge the traditional categorisation of the ‘five’ senses and her forms give the body something to map onto, to reflect sensations it knows or attempts to remember. There is an energy and optimism for the pursuit of the unknown that reflects Woodcock’s interest in the 1960s Space Age, with visions of curvaceous environments and bodily intimacy.
The central element of the work is cast in Portland stone composite from a stretched fabric former, recalling earlier works by the artist that have utilized experimental upholstery techniques alongside CAD software, soft sculptures, furniture and wearables.
