Measuring 6 ¼” this work represents an actual product of hair loss treatment that the artist has generally been using for the last 12 years or so. It is rendered in ceramic and, although life size, it has a distinct flop towards one side. In a very simple and puerile way this piece wants to shine a light on specifically male anxieties that are often hidden. The idea of connecting hair-loss and loss of erection is very loaded and is referred to further within Oliver’s film.
Guy Oliver’s new body of work continues his long-standing interest in exploring issues of male identity, notions of failure and the concept of the tragi-comic, delving into the sometimes uncomfortable subjects of embarrassing ailments that tend to affect men and their fragile egos.
