Through diverse media, Norman Hyams scrutinises everyday life through personal childhood memory, usually working from photographs that intrigue him. The brushwork in his paintings creates a rich, atmospheric and cinematic mood through the energetic use of chiaroscuro, which is layered with dynamic mark-marking, drawing the viewer in as voyeur.Often revisiting the same image with intense scrutiny, as he voyages though his life story, Hyams reveals the discomfort between his characters that contributes to a sense of isolation and disquiet. These mundane scenes are enigmatic, complex and carefully composed, through the careful and meditative application of repetitive and rhythmic brushwork.
