The artwork titled "Social" cleverly explores the theme of elite social gatherings and lifestyle through a play on words in its title. The title also sparks a refection on the very meaning of the word “social” and how it has changed in recent times with technology. This work revolves around the idea of “lack”, by presenting a cropped photograph of Lady Diana and a male figure, the painting creates an ironic twist as the title contradicts the absence of social interaction depicted. The figures turn their shoulders away from each other, moving with oppositional forces, generating a tense vacuity within the scene. Rather than the two figures, the empty space between them becomes the focal point of the artwork. This void serves as a reminder of the superficiality and emptiness inherent in shallow social relationships, governed by the small talk, proper of the upper class. By emphasising this void, the painting prompts contemplation on the hollowness of such interactions.
