EMILY MOTTO

Emily Motto will create a sculptural drawing through the Potting Shed that engages with movements of people passing through the space. Developed from forms made in experimental drawing workshops on Chalton Street, this proposal stems from questions of how drawings can exist in multidimensional spaces and be built collectively – with marks and lines having dependencies on bodies constructing them, and capturing something of the space shared by a group. 

Working with malleable sculptural materials (such as pipe, foam, board, tubing, mesh and wire) the work will play with both flat marks and surfaces, and tactile forms and materials. For the Potting Shed, the forms made to create a route through the space will be based on shapes and materials developed from drawing experiments with a group at the NLS in Jamaica (Jan-May 2019). Motto will spend a week drawing these forms, inviting selected groups from Chalton and local community groups to help in their construction, and exploring how different shapes, lines, forms and materials relate to people passing through the space.
