MODERN DECORATORS NEW PAINTERS

Modern Painters, New Decorators is an art organisation running projects and building creative communities from a gallery, shop and workspace in Loughborough, East Midlands. They run a programme of art related activities including exhibitions, talks, events, markets and workshops with the aim of addressing issues around civic pride and community cohesion. They support and develop opportunities for regional and emerging artists. 

A Mountain is a Mountain is an exhibition of makeshift ceramics, display structures and posters about humans, nature and clay. The installation is assembled from pieces made through a series of workshops with young people, local creatives, and the general public at their project space in Loughborough. 

Working collaboratively MPND have created a social response to The Potting Shed, using a collection of nature themed charity shop ceramics as their starting point. Using clay, plasticine and paint their team and community have replicated, distorted and adapted the ceramics, something sourced from the earth, converted to a domestic product, then manipulated to become feral and synthetic. These collections of found and made sculptures and ceramics are exhibited on display structures by artist-fabricator George Chinnery and posters by curator David John Scarborough featuring words of  George Monbiot and the Book of Job; examining the scales we engage with the natural world. The title of the show takes inspiration from the Buddhist journey to enlightenment in which man attempts to understand reality, only to come to peace with the natural order of things. As we continue to superimpose our own ideas on to the natural world, nature continues on at it’s own pace.
