Robert Phillips' sculptures can be seen as artefacts, found whilst investigating a forgotten time or civilisation, filling in gaps presented by a dark age. Artefacts abstracted by history that allude to forgotten Gods and hidden truths. However as comfortably as these objects would sit in a glass cabinet at a museum they wouldn't be out of place on the set of a sci-fi movie; they flip between the sacred and irreverent; as soon as they could be a precious artefact or relic, they could be a prop.
Phillips' latest series of works have been made in stone, an integral material from ancient history. A material that weathers time and whose undressed husks gives us clues of the activities and beliefs of ancient civilisations. Whereas his previous sculptures have tended to involve sheet materials pattern cut and then assembled, stone is an entirely different process of material removal. It requires you to look into the material and see the form within it, removing layers and revealing strata, which is in itself an archaeological process.
