Scry V, painted with acrylic on linen, depicts an unknown woman looking at herself in the mirror. The loose, gestural brushstrokes abstract the figurative painting, making it nebulous, evoking a sense of unease. In her Mirror series, Lancaster explores the portrayal of women in art by employing silhouettes and reflections in mirrors. In this way, she is reflecting upon the history of women in painting, mute and without agency, their stories erased, and their only purpose to satisfy the (primarily) male gaze. The title refers to the ancient magical practice of foretelling the future using a crystal ball or other reflective object or surface. Her images are inspired by “accidental” analogue found photographs that she collects from online auction sites, flea markets and junk shops. Lancaster transforms these seemingly disposable images into reversals of the male gaze, revealing the grotesque and nostalgic representation of womanhood. While depicting women in classical poses that stem from art history and the classical conventions of painting, Lancaster charges them with a new meaning, reappropriating these patriarchal motifs and the history of portraiture, a feminist take on women's portrayal.
