Our leading light - painted in acrylic, oil and oil pastel, with the addition of glitter on canvas - shows a moth resting against a wall. The scene plays upon the understanding that moths will seek out a light source - be it the moon or a candle - but in this dream-like inversion of the moth’s nature, it rests near a light switch on a wall decorated with stylised raindrops. Across the exhibition we encounter moments of overlap between the man made and the natural world, with an implicit suggestion that one inevitably changes the nature of the other.
Intentional inconsistencies - a blue sky outside the window while it appears to rain inside - sparks a dialogue between the realms of imagination and reality, creating a surreal and dreamlike atmosphere. This juxtaposition takes on a specific meaning, especially when considered along another painting in the exhibition, Outside is barking, depicting the same stylised raindrops falling outside a window. The moth's wings’ hues add a surreal and hallucinatory quality to the scene. Webb weaves a mirage-like storytelling through visual language, and sees each individual work as a frame of a continuous cinematic sequence. Through the arrangement of these frames, patterns emerge, where objects, colours, and shapes interact to convey a cohesive narrative.
