This large mixed media painting shows a giant black and yellow spider sitting at the centre of her web, descending towards a fly trapped in its silvery tendrils. The violence of this moment seemingly echo’s the smashed window - also rendered in silver glitter and blue - which we encountered in an earlier painting Outside is barking. Rather than being a monstrous presence in the painting, this arachnid apex predator is equal to the beauty of the yellow blossom that mirrors it in the composition. The fine natural geometry of the web is a counterpoint to the swirling paintwork within the large green and brown leaves which fill much of the foreground in the painting. And further back in the composition, delicate new growth creeps into the empty space of the canvas, gradually filling the scene with new life. A reminder of the continuous cycle of the natural world.
