Archipelago embraces the themes explored in the other works from the exhibition Wild Life at Brooke Benington, navigating them on a more domestic and familiar yet ambitious scale. The painting evokes a sense of theatricality within its space, where a blend of familiar and anomalous objects is arranged to blur the boundaries between realism and abstraction. These elements are either meticulously rendered in a realist style or left as abstract silhouettes, evoking a feeling of abandonment or incompleteness, as if they are waiting for something unresolved.
This sense of constraint is enhanced by the minimalist approach to the figure/ground relationship and by the cropped body parts. Simple divisions within the composition evoke the stark geometry of grid-based painting, imposing additional boundaries on the bodies that inhabit the space. The result is an uncanny exploration of the tension between control and chaos, presence and absence, all within a familiar but distorted reality.
