Perpetual stew is a charcoal and graphite drawing part of Ross Taylor's exhibition Fortnight, a reflection on the passage of time and a critique of societal structure. Taylor suggests that a fortnight allows escape from the rigidity of the weekly repetitive patterns, a more variable period than the week, where the "imminent" societal rules can be questioned. The work portrays a human figure wearing a wooden mask which expresses a sense of dazed joy. As people become immersed in the monotony of their routines, they transform into instinct-driven creatures, moving through life almost on autopilot. Taylor explores this theme, reflecting on how our daily existence is often reduced to repetitive tasks and takes place in familiar surroundings.
