The Potting Shed is a permanent multi-functional artwork commissioned for Contemporary Sculpture Fulmer. It was designed by socially engaged arts group, Collective Matter, in collaboration with furniture designer Geoffrey Hagger.
The Shed takes inspiration from the iconic Black Mountain College and Bauhaus schools, to create a piece of ‘not- architecture’ that is curated as a project space by Collective Matter. As part of the structure of the space, Collective Matter made 400 smoke-fired clay floor tiles – which have been fired on site – made from reclaimed brick clay left over from their social engagement project Material Action at the Tate Modern, in 2017.

This clay, which was originally used for a variety of community projects across London, is now re-appropriated to form the foundations of continued learning amongst professional artists. The Potting Shed is a site of collaborations, projects, talks and exhibitions; creating a space that reflects Collective Matter’s ethos of experimental and collaborative exchange and Contemporary Sculpture Fulmer’s ongoing commitment to supporting artists.
Note: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, programming and community events in the Potting Shed have been paused until 2021.
